Remote Job? Your Resume Needs These 5 Things

5 min read

Remote jobs attract 3x more applicants than on-site roles.

That means competition is fierce. And employers are specifically screening for "can this person actually work remotely?"

Here's what they look for — and how to show it on your resume.

1. Explicit Remote Work Experience

If you've worked remotely before, say so.

Don't: Software Engineer | TechCorp | 2021 – 2023
Do: Software Engineer (Remote) | TechCorp | 2021 – 2023

That one word signals you've done this successfully before. If you've worked in hybrid setups, mention it: "Marketing Manager (Hybrid: 3 days remote)".

2. Communication and Documentation Skills

Remote work lives and dies by communication. Employers want to know you can write clearly, document work, and communicate asynchronously.

"Collaborated with team members"
"Led weekly asynchronous standups via Loom, keeping distributed team aligned across 4 time zones"
"Worked on projects"
"Documented technical decisions in Notion, reducing onboarding time for new team members by 50%"

3. Time Zone and Collaboration Context

Remote employers often care about time zone overlap. Make it easy for them:

  • In contact info: "San Francisco, CA (PST) | Open to async collaboration with global teams"
  • In experience: "Coordinated daily with engineering teams in Berlin and design teams in Tokyo"

4. Self-Management Evidence

Remote managers can't see you working. They need to trust you'll deliver without supervision.

  • "Independently managed 3 concurrent projects with minimal oversight"
  • "Self-initiated process improvements that reduced manual work by 8 hours/week"
  • "Established personal productivity systems resulting in consistent on-time delivery"

5. Tools and Technology Proficiency

Remote work requires technical fluency. List relevant tools:

Collaboration: Slack, Microsoft Teams, Zoom

Project management: Asana, Trello, Jira, Linear

Documentation: Notion, Confluence, Google Docs

Async communication: Loom, Vidyard

Don't just list them — show you've used them effectively: "Managed product backlog in Linear, maintaining 95% accuracy in sprint commitments across fully remote team"

Bonus: Your Location Strategy

  • If you're in a desirable time zone: Yes. US-based candidates are preferred for many US remote roles.
  • If you're willing to work odd hours: Mention it. "Available for overlap with EST business hours."
  • If the job says "US remote only": Include your US location prominently.
